Pupils of Zara Educational Complex in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region have joined the call for peace as Ghana prepares for the December 7 elections.
The children took to the principal streets of the municipality and Kumasi, holding placards to remind Ghanaians of the importance of maintaining peace before, during, and after the elections. Though not eligible to vote, the pupils carried messages such as, “We want to grow up in a peaceful Ghana, make it happen,” and “Politicians, let peace prevail.”
The march, themed “Campaigning for violence-free elections: We will win together,” featured pupils displaying Ghana’s national flag and wearing colours of various political parties to symbolize unity and putting the nation above partisan interests.
The preschoolers marked the event with cultural displays at the school, donning traditional attire from various regions to showcase Ghana’s rich diversity, while older students marched through the streets campaigning for peace.
One pupil, Christodia Achiaa Frimpong, said, “Though I am not part of the election, I want them to vote in peace. We want a better Ghana.”
Another student, Alhassan Abdul-Wahab, added, “I am young and not old enough to vote, but we only need peace. If there is no peace, the country can be destroyed.”
The Proprietress of Zara Educational Complex, Ayisha Bawa, explained the march was a heartfelt appeal for peace from the younger generation to the public and leaders.
She noted, “We are making a peace campaign to ensure everyone understands that voting for peace is crucial not just on Election Day but before and after as well. Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable during conflicts, and using children to campaign for peace can influence adults with harmful intentions to reconsider.”
This initiative comes amid heightened calls for peaceful elections, reinforced by the recent signing of a peace pact by political parties to reaffirm their commitment to nonviolence during the electoral process.
