The Weija Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service says it is putting measures in place to deal with the faces behind the trafficking of people into the enclave for cyber fraud and commercial sex activities.
The call follows the repatriation of some 97 foreign nationals to their home countries reuniting them with their families.
Commercial sex activities are rife in the Weija Gbawe enclave as the area has carved a niche for itself as one of the popular markets for commercial sex workers and patrons.
The command says some survivors are sometimes assured that Ghana would only serve as a transit point to other countries but end up being pushed into illegal businesses once they arrive in Ghana.
The command says Internet fraud and other online crimes are also on the ascendency further worsening the issue.
Assistant Commissioner of Immigration for the Weija Sector Command Richard Coffie tells Citi News the Command’s major challenges in dealing with the menace have been the reluctance of survivors to share information regarding sponsors and perpetrators of the act.
“It’s not been easy but I want to say that as a command we have been able to achieve a lot. Some people entered the country illegally and within a few weeks we arrested them. We also intercepted traffickers trafficking innocent victims and have been able to reunite them with their families.
“A lot of these trafficked individuals are exploited by their paymasters and I think that the Weija Command has exhibited a lot of professionalism in dealing with the menace. As a command, we have also exceeded our target for this year and I think this year has been good” Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Richard Coffie said.
“One of our major challenges in the fight against the menace has been that survivors feel reluctant to share information regarding the sponsors and perpetrators of the act making it difficult to win the fight”the commander said.
The command has also chalked a lot of successes in infrastructure development with the command building a decent place of convenience for its staff.
“When I took over as sector commander I realized that their major challenge was a decent washroom facility. We took the initiative to seek support from companies within the constituency for support and it worked in our favour. The companies supported us with material to ensure that our project was successful. This is a decent facility compared to the old one that was in use”ACI Richard Coffie said.
