The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has denied allegations that its staff caused a fire at a residential facility at Two-Streams, a suburb of Koforidua, following a disconnection exercise.
According to the company, the claims are baseless and should be disregarded by the public.
In a statement signed by Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager of External Communications for ECG, the company clarified that the incident in question involved a customer who owed an outstanding amount of GH¢6,519.38 since September 2024.
As part of an ongoing revenue mobilisation campaign, dubbed “Operation Keep the Lights On,” ECG staff visited the customer’s premises on January 24, 2025. During this visit, they discovered an illegal self-reconnection and decided to disconnect the facility due to the violation.
The disconnection exercise reportedly met resistance from the customer, who allegedly threatened the ECG staff with a machete.
The team then sought police assistance to complete the disconnection safely.
The disconnection was carried out directly from the pole outside the premises. Reports indicate that the fire outbreak occurred later in the day, long after ECG personnel had left the scene.
ECG said in its statement that disconnecting power from the pole is a standard procedure and does not, in any way, cause fire outbreaks.
The company emphasised that these allegations are unfounded and do not align with its operational practices.
“ECG wishes to state categorically that disconnection of power supply directly from a pole totally curtails electricity supply to the affected premises and CANNOT, by any means, result in a fire outbreak. Thus, the customer’s allegation against ECG is completely false. Disconnection has been part of our operations, backed by law, to ensure that recalcitrant customers pay for the electricity they consume,” the statement explained in part.
The company also reassured the public of its commitment to safety and professionalism, emphasising that it would never engage in actions that jeopardise the lives and property of its customers.
As a precautionary reminder, ECG urged customers to pay their electricity bills promptly and avoid illegal connections.
