The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns over the age and tenure of newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Speaking in Parliament on March 18, 2025, Afenyo-Markin cited an official statement indicating that IGP Yohuno has served in the Ghana Police Service for 40 years.

Given his reported age of 60, he questioned at what age Yohuno joined the service, suggesting the need for further scrutiny.

Christian Tetteh Yohuno was appointed IGP on March 13, 2025, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. His appointment has sparked discussions about his length of service and its implications for his tenure.

Afenyo-Markin stated that the Minority intends to investigate the matter further to ensure transparency and adherence to public service regulations.

“The Minister in his answer took the opportunity to introduce the new IGP. I want to congratulate him on his appointment. Suffice it to say that in the statement from the Minister responsible for Government Communications, he told the country that the new IGP has spent forty years in the service.

“Forty years as a police officer, so at the right time we will calculate whether he entered at age 20, 19, or 18—his age and all.

“That is just by the way, I wish him. I am only doing the mathematics as to whether the IGP is going to retire very soon. But Mr Speaker, that’s beside the point,” he stated.
