The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, has urged the National Premix Fuel Committee (NPFC) to collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to regularise and inaugurate Landing Beach Committees (LBCs) in line with Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2233).
She emphasised that strict enforcement would enhance transparency and fairness in the distribution system.
Speaking at the National Premix Fuel Committee inauguration, she also urged the committee to audit the use of the 53% community fund to promote equity, accountability, and address financial and technical challenges within the sector.
“We wish to recommend that the national premix fuel committee issue appointment letters to validate of landing beach committee members and educate them on the provisions of the L.I. 2233 to empower them to discharge their responsibilities.
“There is also an urgent need to identify internal risk control and institute appropriate control measures to eliminate corruption and abuse of the system.
“I therefore encourage each member of this committee to approach their responsibilities with a high sense of ethical behaviour, integrity, and expertise as your contributions will be pivotal in shaping a sustainable future for our fishing industry,” she stated.
The Chairman of the National Premix Fuel Committee (NPFC), Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor pledged to tackle issues surrounding premix fuel distribution, urging members to treat it as a national priority.
“There are nearly 70 districts that are affected by the operations of premix. So, I want to urge the committee members to, as a matter of urgency, look at the matters that the minister raised by engaging the communities frequently and also ensuring that we monitor the distribution to ensure equitable distribution and fair pricing and also deal with previous sales and accountability of monies that are supposed to have gone to the communities for their development,” he stated.
