Ghana and Japan have deepened long-standing partnerships with the signing of an agreement for the Japanese Grant Assistance under the “Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship” (JDS), totalling Four Hundred and Two Million Japanese Yen (approximately USD 2.6 million).

The agreement was formalised on Monday, June 2, 2025, in Accra through an Exchange of Notes between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana and the Embassy of Japan.

Ambassador Ramses Joseph Cleland, Chief Director of the Ministry, signed on behalf of Ghana, while the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Yoshimoto Hiroshi, represented the Government of Japan.

Ambassador Cleland highlighted the JDS’s importance in equipping Ghana’s youth with advanced skills and knowledge, emphasising that the scholarship programme is a strategic investment in the country’s human capital.

He described the grant as a reflection of the strong, enduring cooperation between the two nations and appreciated Japan for its continued support of Ghana’s development agenda.

Ambassador Hiroshi praised Ghana’s ongoing commitment to the program and noted that since its launch in 2012, the JDS has been instrumental in building the capacity of future Ghanaian leaders.

He reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to fostering long-term development through quality education and pledged continued support for Ghana’s human resource advancement.

The Japanese Development Scholarship enables Ghanaian professionals to pursue postgraduate studies in Japanese universities aimed at enhancing administrative and policy-making capacities across key sectors.
