President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his call for swift justice over the violence recorded during the 2024 general elections, directing the Inspector General of Police to urgently conclude investigations and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Post-2024 Elections Evaluation Dialogue organised by the National Peace Council in Koforidua, President Mahama stressed the importance of swift action in holding perpetrators accountable and restoring public trust in Ghana’s democratic process.

“The IGP, expedite investigations into these acts of electoral violence and bring the perpetrators to justice. The Attorney General is also working on a report to be presented to Cabinet for adequate compensation to be paid to victims and relatives of those affected by the violence,” the President stated.

The dialogue session, aimed at reviewing the conduct of the 2024 elections and strengthening mechanisms to prevent future electoral disturbances, brought together political actors, civil society organisations, and peace-building stakeholders.

President Mahama further highlighted the positive impact of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), which was passed to curb the rise of politically affiliated violence. He said the disbandment of vigilante groups has played a significant role in reducing politically motivated attacks during elections.

“The disbandment of party vigilante groups through the passage of the Vigilantism and Related Offenses Act, 2019 (Act 999) was a step in the right direction that has helped to reduce politically motivated violence to some extent,” he added.

This is not the first time President Mahama has demanded swift action over electoral violence. His latest call comes amid renewed public demand for transparency and justice following violent incidents at several polling stations and collation centres during the 2024 elections—some of which resulted in injuries and loss of lives.

President Mahama assured the nation that his administration will not condone impunity and will work to provide redress for victims as part of ongoing electoral and security sector reforms.
