The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has refuted media reports linking the association to Kojo Peprah, who was arrested by the Special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce for allegedly obstructing an anti-illegal mining operation in the Desiri Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement released on Friday, July 11, the Association clarified that Mr. Peprah has no ties whatsoever to GNASSM, countering what it described as “viral media reports” falsely identifying him as a representative of the group.
“In light of viral media reports falsely linking Mr. Peprah to the Small Scale Miners Association, we wish to set the record straight: Kojo Peprah is not, and has never been, the President, Chairman, or member of GNASSM,” the statement declared.
The statement, signed by General Secretary, Godwin Nickleson Amarh, underscored GNASSM’s well-established leadership structure, stressing that Mr. Peprah holds no position within the organisation at the national, regional, or district level.
Reaffirming its position, the Association stressed its dedication to ethical mining practices and its collaboration with state institutions to clamp down on illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
“As an association, GNASSM remains firmly committed to responsible and sustainable small-scale mining practices. We have consistently partnered with the government and security agencies in the ongoing fight against illegal mining (galamsey) across the country,” it said.
The Association urged the media and general public to be cautious in spreading unverified claims, especially on matters that impact national security and environmental integrity.
Kojo Peprah was arrested on July 10 after confronting members of the anti-galamsey taskforce in the Desiri Forest Reserve. According to police accounts, he demanded the team explain their mission in the forest, which led to his arrest.
He has since been transferred to the Nkawie Police to assist with ongoing investigations.
