The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that political parties were fully consulted before the announcement of the by-election date for the Akwatia Constituency.
Speaking in an interview on the Channel One Newsroom on Wednesday, July 30, Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research at the EC, stated that the plans were laid out during a meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), which includes representatives of all registered political parties.
“Yes, at the IPAC meeting all the political parties were present, and the Commission put before the meeting the preparation and the plans that the Commission is making regarding the receipt of the letter from Parliament. So indeed they were consulted,” Tetteh said.
His comments come after the EC officially scheduled the Akwatia by-election for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi. The vacancy was declared in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution.
In a statement signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, the Commission outlined key dates and requirements for the nomination process. Nomination forms will be accepted from Monday, August 11 to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the EC’s Denkyembour District Office.
Interested candidates are required to:

Submit four copies of the completed forms
Provide endorsements from 20 registered voters (including a proposer and a seconder)
Attach two recent passport photos with a red background
Include a signed declaration of consent
The filing fee is set at GHC10,000 per candidate, with a reduced fee of GHC7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities.
