The Ghana Police Service has appealed to elders and residents of Teshie in Accra to comply with a court order restraining them from holding any outdoor event in relation to this year’s Homowo Festival.
At a meeting with youth groups on Saturday, August 30, 2025, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Baah, Kpeshie Divisional Commander, urged residents to respect the order in the interest of public peace.
He explained that the decision followed engagements between the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), chiefs, elders, and other stakeholders, which concluded that securing an injunction against the celebration was in the best interest of the community.
“The chiefs, clan heads, and all interested parties have been served with the restraining order. We urge the youth to obey it,” ACP Baah stressed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Obed Dzikunu, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Commander, acknowledged the frustrations of the youth but emphasized that the measure was necessary to safeguard lives and property.
“We urge the youth to place public peace and safety above all other interests. We will always have the celebrations with us, but we cannot bring back any life that is lost in the process,” DCOP Dzikunu said, warning that anyone who defies the order would be arrested and prosecuted.
The directive follows violent clashes on Wednesday, August 26, during the sprinkling of Kpokpoi between the Gbugblah and Lenshie clans, left three people dead.
In response, MUSEC engaged stakeholders to develop guidelines for the remaining festival activities. Although initial disagreements stalled discussions, it was agreed that further engagements would be held to seek an amicable solution.
However, due to escalating tensions, the police secured an injunction against the Teshie Traditional Council and six others, the Teshie Council of Elders, and the heads of the Gbugblah, Lenshie, Agbawe, Krobo, and Kle clans, barring them from organizing any outdoor events on August 30 and 31.
