The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) of Ghana has urged the government to revive the operations of key State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
The union expressed concern that companies such as Neoplan Ghana Limited, Akosombo Industrial Company Limited, among others are in dire need of a facelift to enhance their productivity and operations.
Speaking at the 12th Quadrennial Delegates Conference on Thursday, August 21, the General Secretary of the union, Morgan Ayawine, stated that the revival of these enterprises could play a crucial role in creating sustainable employment opportunities for the country’s youth.
“We call on the government to revive distressed state-owned enterprises. Many of which, if rejuvenated, will drastically reduce youth unemployment. These include Neoplan Ghana Limited, Cocoa Processing Company, New Times Corporation, Graphic Communication Group Limited, Pwalugu Tomato Factory and Akosombo Industrial Company Limited. Government must act decisively to resuscitate these enterprises and create sustainable jobs for our youth,” he stated.
However, the Minister for Jobs, Labour and Employment, Dr. Abdul Rashid Pelpuo, called for collaboration and dialogue to address all concerns and reach an amicable solution.
“To create a collaborative and supportive work environment, the role of employers is key in fostering employee motivation and productivity. Fair wages and benefits are drivers of employee motivation. Employees feel valued and recognised for their contributions and are more likely to be engaged and productive.
“Investing in the training and development of employees with the necessary skills and knowledge will not only enhance their performance but also boost their confidence and promote work-life balance, reduce stress, improve morale, and increase job satisfaction. This requires fostering a culture of togetherness and teamwork at the workplace for increased collaboration and productivity,” he said.
