Renowned lawyer and stalwart of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Tsatsu Tsikata, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of eight officials in the August 6 military helicopter crash.
Speaking at the Evening of Reflections and Memorial at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, Mr. Tsikata reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy on the victims’ families and the nation, expressing hope that their deaths would inspire unity and healing.
The memorial honoured the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and military crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The victims were en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP), aimed at addressing illegal mining, when their aircraft went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, on Wednesday, August 6.
“It is a sad day indeed,” Mr. Tsikata said. “Their loss has been in very tragic circumstances. The greatest pain will be felt by their families, their spouses, and their children.”
He urged that the victims’ dedication to public service should not be forgotten.
“We can only hope and pray that what they lived and died for will be a lesson for all of us,” he advised.
Echoing President John Mahama’s earlier remarks, Mr. Tsikata called for the tragedy to serve as “a lesson in the healing of the nation, and that is a legacy that they will leave behind,” suggesting that their memory could help bridge divisions.
The memorial, attended by government officials, political figures, and the victims’ families, was both a tribute and a call for national reflection—reminding all that beyond their public roles, the loss was deeply personal for their loved ones.
