Akufo-Addo govt was complicit in galamsey – Kwakye Ofosu

Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has accused the previous Akufo-Addo-led government of being complicit in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking on the issue on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday September 16, he claimed the previuous government failed to genuinely address the menace, allowing party and government officials to profit from it.

“The previous government completely failed to address it. I have said it and I will repeat it — that government was complicit in galamsey. Their party hierarchy was involved,” he stated.

Ofosu cited a report by former Environment Minister, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, as evidence of the involvement of high-ranking officials in the illegal mining trade.

“Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who they themselves chose to lead the fight, has a report which is damning and shows the involvement of government officials, party officials,” he said.

He added that the former minister had even alleged that galamsey served as a major source of funding for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“He has gone on record to have said that galamsey was a major source of finance for the NPP. So it was little wonder that they were not interested in fighting it,” Kwakye Ofosu asserted.

He underscored that the public was justified in voting the Akufo-Addo administration out of office.

“Ghanaians were right to throw them out in the manner that they did. Ghanaians showed righteous indignation, and it is right that they did so,” he added.
