Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari says the government is taking steps to reduce high port costs and improve efficiency in Ghana’s shipping industry through the implementation of the Ghana Shippers Authority Act.
Speaking on the state of the maritime sector when he took his turn at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, Wednesday, September 17, the Minister said the shipping industry plays a key role in Ghana’s economy but has long been held back by weak regulations and high operational costs.
“The shipping industry is vital to our economy [but] has been hindered by weak regulations affecting port efficiency and cost,” he said.
To address this, he announced that the Ghana Shippers Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1122), which was passed in July 2024, is expected to bring major reforms to the sector. The law is designed to promote fair pricing and introduce best practices in port operations.
“Ghana Shippers Authority Act 2024, Act 11 (22), passed in July 2024, aims to address these issues, ensure fair pricing and promote best practices,” he stated.
The Minister further revealed that the Ghana Shippers Authority is currently developing the necessary regulations to implement the law. These regulations are expected to be submitted to Parliament before the end of the year.
“Once passed, the regulation will enable the Ghana Shippers Authority to implement measures that will reduce port costs,” he added.
