The Old Vandals Association (OVA), alumni of the University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall, has donated a brand-new desktop computer set to the Legon Police District Command to support its administrative and digital operations.
The presentation, held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, forms part of the Association’s commitment to strengthening public institutions through technology and capacity support. The OVA also installed modern software on the computer to enhance its performance and help the police adapt to the fast-changing digital environment.
Police Hail OVA’s Gesture
Receiving the donation, the Acting District Commander, Superintendent Charles Kwakye, expressed deep appreciation to the Association on behalf of the Ghana Police Service. He described the gesture as timely and impactful, noting that it would significantly improve record keeping and administrative efficiency at the Command.
“The computer and installed applications will make a real difference in how we work,” Superintendent Kwakye said. “We need to be digitally equipped to deliver the quality service the public deserves.”
He, however, appealed for further assistance, explaining that the Command still faces a severe shortage of computers across its offices. “We would appreciate at least four additional computers and printers to help us run more efficiently,” he added.
OVA Promises Continued Support
In response, the President of the Old Vandals Association, Mr. Isaac Nketsiah Sarpong (Esq), commended the police for their dedication to public safety and pledged the Association’s continued partnership.
He announced that the OVA plans to adopt the Legon Police District Command as one of its permanent beneficiaries. “We will do our best to provide the additional computers and printers requested,” Mr. Sarpong assured. “Our aim is to ensure the Command is fully equipped to operate smoothly and efficiently.”
Living the Ideals of ‘Vandalism’
Explaining the spirit behind their benevolent acts, Mr. Sarpong said the term “VANDAL” reflects the Commonwealth Hall values of being Vivacious, Altruistic, Neighbourly, Dynamic, Affable, and Loyal — all anchored by the Hall’s enduring motto, “Truth Stands.”
He stressed that, for the Old Vandals, “Vandalism” represents integrity, community service, and positive activism — not destruction, but constructive action aimed at improving society.
A Tradition of Service
Since its establishment, the OVA has been actively engaged in philanthropy, supporting educational institutions and social facilities across Ghana. The Association has adopted several schools for the deaf and blind, offering annual donations and financial aid to improve teaching and learning conditions.
The donation to the Legon Police District Command, therefore, forms part of this ongoing tradition of service, aimed at addressing critical resource gaps that limit effective public service delivery.
Call for Broader National Support
The OVA also urged other alumni associations, corporate institutions, and philanthropists to extend similar support to public agencies struggling with limited resources.
They emphasised that sustainable national development depends on collective effort, civic responsibility, and partnerships that strengthen public institutions for the benefit of all.
