Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid a glowing tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as one of the most consequential Ghanaian women of her generation whose impact on national development and women’s empowerment is firmly established in history.
In a written tribute, former President Akufo-Addo said Nana Konadu became the embodiment of Ghana’s women’s struggle for self-empowerment, noting that her dynamism, boldness, and eloquence helped shape advocacy for women’s rights.
“She became the embodiment of the women’s struggle for self-empowerment,” he said.
He highlighted her role in founding the 31st December Women’s Movement, which he said became one of the most influential women-focused organisations in the country.
Akufo-Addo recalled her activism extending beyond Ghana’s borders, making her one of the continent’s most prominent women leaders.
He recounted appointing her in 2018, as President, to lead Ghana’s delegation to South Africa for the funeral of anti-apartheid icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela—an assignment he said he gave her because she was unquestionably the most appropriate Ghanaian woman for the role.
“Her activism struck a chord beyond the borders of Ghana, and in time, she featured amongst the continent’s best known women,” he said.
He described Nana Konadu as a “vivacious, sparkling woman” whose company he enjoyed, adding that both he and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, had warm relations with her and her husband, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Akufo-Addo expressed condolences to the Rawlings family—particularly the couple’s children, Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, and Kimathi—and urged them to take solace in the full life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.
He concluded with a prayer: “May God bless her and give her soul a peaceful place of abode in His Bosom until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again. Amen.”
