The Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno’s Special Operations Taskforce has launched a series of targeted security operations in Tamale, focusing particularly on clamping down on illicit drug peddling and abuse.

The team, made up of 50 officers and eight service vehicles—including the Black Maria—is led by ASP Bawa Abdul Jalil.

The contingent arrived at the Northern Regional Police Headquarters at about 1300 hours on Wednesday, November 19, where they met the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Adam Abubakar Takoro.

Both officials expressed strong appreciation for the deployment, describing it as timely and critical.

They urged the officers to execute their duties with urgency, dedication, and professionalism to help curb rising crime in the region.

The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, also welcomed the officers and outlined several emerging security threats in the area.

These include a surge in the sale and distribution of illicit drugs and contraband, rising drug abuse among the youth, and multiple reported robbery cases.

He stressed the need for teamwork, discipline, and unity of purpose, encouraging the task force to maintain high operational standards throughout their assignment.

After the briefing, the team immediately re-boarded their vehicles and deployed across the Tamale township and surrounding communities.

Their operations for the day included visibility patrols, intelligence gathering, and other assigned tasks aimed at improving public safety and restoring public confidence.

The presence of the IGP’s Special Operations Team is expected to strengthen ongoing security efforts and address the growing concerns of residents in the Northern Region.
