The Afro Arab Group of Companies has officially launched an electric vehicle “trotro,” marking a major step in its push for sustainable mobility and affordable public transportation.
The electric trotro, designed as a modern alternative to conventional fuel-powered minibuses, is expected to reduce carbon emissions while lowering operational costs in urban transport.
As part of its Christmas festivities and corporate social responsibility activities, the company has rolled out a free-ride programme for commuters throughout the festive season. The initiative is intended to give passengers a firsthand experience of electric public transport while easing transportation costs during the holidays.
Speaking to Citi News at the launch of the free-ride initiative, Chief Executive Officer of Afro Arab Group of Companies, Ambassador Alhaji Salam Amadu, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and social impact.
“This electric trotro represents the future of public transport in Africa—clean, efficient, and affordable. Offering free rides during Christmas is our way of giving back to the community and allowing passengers to experience the benefits of electric mobility,” he said.
The electric trotro features modern safety systems, comfortable seating, and zero tailpipe emissions, making it both passenger-friendly and environmentally responsible. It is expected to operate on selected routes during a pilot phase, with plans for nationwide expansion depending on performance and public reception.
Passengers who took part in the initial rides expressed excitement about the quiet operation and smooth driving experience, describing it as a significant improvement on traditional minibuses.
Industry observers say the initiative could help accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in public transport, potentially setting a new benchmark for sustainable mobility in the country.
