Israeli strikes intensify as mediators warn Gaza ceasefire talks at ‘critical moment’

Israeli airstrikes continued in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday, December 7, with attacks reported in the Maghazi refugee camp.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli military confirmed operations in northern Gaza, where seven Palestinians, including a 70-year-old woman and her son, were killed, according to local health officials.

The escalation comes as mediators raise alarm over stalled negotiations. Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, warned that the fragile ceasefire framework is at a “critical moment” and risks collapsing without swift progress toward a permanent agreement.

Amid rising regional tensions, Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa accused Israel of fueling instability to divert international attention from the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

According to Gaza health authorities, more than 70,354 Palestinians have been killed and 171,030 injured since the conflict began in October 2023.

Israel says 1,139 people were killed during the October 7, 2023, attacks, in which about 200 individuals were also taken captive.

Mediators say efforts to revive talks are ongoing, but warn that continued military escalation could undermine any path toward a sustained ceasefire.
