Former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah, has expressed concern over what he describes as a persistent lack of research-driven policymaking in Ghana’s political space.
Speaking on Upside Down on Channel One TV on Sunday, January 25, Dr Amoah stated that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have, over the years, failed to adequately invest in research and data collection to inform their policies and development programmes.
“I think one of our major difficulties in this country and failures of NPP and NDC, I stand to be corrected, is their inability to research, collect the needed data, and make the right decisions out of it and develop their manifestos and policies of programs,” he said
Dr Amoah criticised what he described as populist campaign promises, noting that political parties often rely on broad and unrealistic assurances rather than evidence-based plans.
“They only come with promises like, ‘We will not pay taxes,’ ‘When I come, everybody will get a job,’ ‘Your roads will be fixed,’ or ‘Next year we’ll do this,’” he added.
