The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched an investigation following reports that military personnel allegedly assaulted a journalist and civilians in Walewale, North East Region.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, January 26, involving soldiers travelling in an armoured vehicle and a truck from Bolgatanga to Tamale.
Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, Member of Parliament for Walewale, alleged that the soldiers stopped in the town around 1:00 p.m., attacked Solomon Kwame Kanaluwe, North East Regional Correspondent for Media General, along with other residents, and destroyed property, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles.
“The journalist was detained for over four hours, and evidence of injuries recorded on his phone was destroyed,” the MP said, adding that the attack left residents in fear and apprehension.
In a statement on Wednesday, January 28, the GAF acknowledged the heightened insecurity in the North East and Upper East regions, noting that such conditions may occasionally necessitate military operations without prior notice. The statement also urged the public to cooperate with the armed forces and other security agencies.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the alleged attack, calling on the Military High Command to act swiftly to restore public trust.
