172 youths from communities within the operational areas of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited (PMGL) have received scholarships totaling GH¢278,279 under the company’s Edikan Trust Fund.
The bursaries are aimed at supporting the beneficiaries’ education in various tertiary institutions.
The scholarship ceremony brought together traditional authorities, community leaders, parents, students, and officials of Perseus Mining, highlighting the company’s commitment to human capital development in its host communities.
This year’s allocation represents an increase of GH¢68,279 over last year’s expenditure, underscoring PMGL’s growing investment in education.
Speaking at the event, Alexander Oduro, General Manager of Perseus Mining, said education was central to thriving communities.
“Education equips individuals with the tools to improve their lives and contribute meaningfully to society,” he stated, assuring that the company would continue empowering host communities through education.
Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Board Chairman of PMGL, described education as a powerful instrument for social transformation.
“Education gives young people the opportunity and skills to dream beyond their circumstances and strengthens the pillars of society by nurturing thinkers, innovators, and responsible citizens,” he said, noting that this belief had guided the company’s consistent support of the Edikan Scholarship Scheme over the past five years.
Nana Agyensaim, Paramount Chief of Owirenkyi Traditional Area, revealed that Perseus Mining had contributed more than GH¢28 million to development projects—including scholarships—since the inception of the Edikan Trust Fund.
The Chairman of the Edikan Trust Fund, Akwasi Gyima Botah, said the fund was established as a development vehicle to improve the socio-economic well-being of communities within PMGL’s operational areas.
Its flagship component, the Edikan Scholarship Scheme, provides financial assistance to deserving but needy students at the tertiary level.
He noted that hundreds of youths had benefited from the programme over the years, many of whom had completed their education and were now contributing back to their communities.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the scholarships, promising to work hard to ensure the investment in their education produced meaningful results.
Through initiatives such as the Edikan Scholarship, Perseus Mining continues to position education as a cornerstone for sustainable development in Ghana’s mining communities.
