The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Nelson Blay Nokotey, a Level 300 Top-Up Journalism student, who died after being knocked down by a vehicle.
In a statement issued on January 22, 2026, the University described the incident as a painful loss that had plunged the entire UniMAC community into mourning and disbelief.
“Nelson was a valued and promising member of the UniMAC family, and his untimely passing is a painful loss to the University and the nation at large,” the statement said.
Management, on behalf of the Governing Council, faculty, staff and students, extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues of the late student.
The statement said University Management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Opoku Mensah, had formally met with the bereaved family and separately engaged the Students’ Representative Council and the wider student body to commiserate with them and reaffirm the University’s solidarity.
According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor indicated that the University, through the Dean of Students Affairs and the Chief Security Officer, was working closely with the Ghana Police Service to support investigations into the incident.
“The University considers this incident a grave violation of the sanctity of human life and will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement until justice is served,” the statement said.
It said Management had also re-engaged relevant state and municipal agencies, including security services, transport and road safety authorities, and local government institutions, to review and implement enhanced road safety measures, particularly within and around the South Legon community.
“These actions are aimed at preventing future loss of life and ensuring that students and residents can live, move, and learn in safety,” the statement noted.
The University appealed to students, staff and the general public to remain calm, law-abiding and cooperative as investigations continued, while honouring the memory of the deceased with dignity.
“In solidarity with the bereaved family and the entire UniMAC community, the University gives its solemn assurance that it will not rest until justice is pursued and concrete measures are implemented to strengthen safety. Nelson’s life mattered, and his memory will remain firmly etched in the conscience of the UniMAC community,” the statement said.
