Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reaffirmed the government’s plan to roll out free primary healthcare for all Ghanaians before the end of April 2026, a key step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Accra Reset Addis Reckoning event in Addis Ababa on Saturday, February 14, the Minister said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian benefits from basic health services.

“As part of our effort to achieve Universal Health Coverage, since everybody is contributing to the NHIS levy, Ghanaians deserve this basic benefit. Everyone should be able to enjoy at least free primary healthcare,” Minister Akandoh stated.

He added that preparations are already advanced, with clear directives from President John Dramani Mahama that the rollout must not extend beyond April.

“We have been directed to ensure that Free Primary Health Care is fully implemented across the country by that timeline,” he said.

The Minister also confirmed the full operationalisation of Mahama Care, the government’s flagship programme aimed at preventing and managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular conditions.
