The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to table a proposal to reserve 10% of its future recruitments for persons with disabilities.
Speaking at a brief ceremony on Friday, February 13, during the disbursement of start-up tools and capital to persons with disabilities, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, disclosed that the proposal will be presented at the Assembly’s next General Assembly meeting.
According to him, the initiative is intended to promote inclusion, empower persons with disabilities, and ensure equal employment opportunities within the Assembly.
“God created us all equally. However, for one reason or another, someone may have a physical impairment. That does not mean the person is any less a part of our community. One of my bodyguards is a person with a disability.
“I am currently in discussions with the Presiding Member of the AMA to hire individuals with disabilities to work for the Assembly. I want us to propose at the next General Assembly that employing persons with disabilities be made compulsory for us. Not everyone is born with a disability, but it can happen to anyone,” he said.
