Asafo-Agyei hails Mahama for ordering Scholarship bribe probe

Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has expressed satisfaction with President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to order an investigation into alleged improprieties surrounding the award of overseas scholarships.

President Mahama’s directive, which tasks the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to probe the allegations, was announced by the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye.

According to the minister, the President’s intervention followed claims made during a radio discussion on Sompa FM, in which it was alleged that money had been paid to secure scholarships for studies abroad.

Mr. Kwakye explained that the allegations were raised by Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP). The discussion has since generated widespread public debate, with many Ghanaians calling for clarity and accountability in the administration of state-sponsored scholarships.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Asafo-Agyei took to his Facebook page to welcome the President’s decision to refer the matter to the NIB, describing it as a necessary step toward protecting the integrity of Ghana’s scholarship system and restoring public confidence.

The Registrar also drew attention to alleged irregularities under the previous administration, accusing it of leaving behind a deeply compromised scholarship system that disadvantaged deserving students while benefiting a privileged few.

“The evil that men do indeed lives after them. While the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration left the nation worst off with the past Registrar having issued fake awards into March 2025, one thing is now certain – the era where the rich, connected and influential cornered scholarships outside merit is over.”
