NOBISCO Fire: Suhuyini refurbishes abandoned block, donates mattresses to students

The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has renovated an abandoned building to provide temporary accommodation for students of the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) following a recent fire outbreak that destroyed the girls’ dormitory.

The January 28 inferno displaced more than 900 students, most of them final-year students, who were initially asked by school authorities to return home and report back a week later to allow management time to secure alternative accommodation.

At a brief handing-over ceremony, Mr Suhuyini, who also serves as Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, presented 100 student mattresses and donated an undisclosed sum of money to support the affected students.

“We have about 100 mattresses that we will be donating to the school to support. I will also provide some money that will be used to procure gari and sugar for the students,” he said.

He added that he had received a request from the headmaster to have the compound gravelled.

“I have also received an appeal from the headmaster for the place to be gravelled. I have assured him that I will return to ensure it is done,” he stated.

The refurbished facility is expected to ease the accommodation challenges faced by the displaced students and enable them to continue their academic work with minimal disruption.

The Headmaster of NOBISCO, Mr Alhassan Dokurugu, expressed gratitude to the MP for what he described as a swift and practical response to the crisis.

“We got our legs broken. We got our dormitory consumed by fire. Out of the lots of sympathising visitors, we got the deputy minister to visit us. He not only came to sympathise but also made a pledge that would ordinarily take long to fulfil,” he said.

“…We thank you for your support,” Mr Dokurugu added, noting that the intervention had brought significant relief to both staff and students of the school.
