Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been installed as a Lay Canon of the St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral in the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua.

A lay canon is a non-ordained person in the Anglican Church honored with the title “Canon” for exceptional service to the church. They are recognized for their leadership in diocesan life, often serving on cathedral chapters, providing specialized expertise, or supporting community mission, though they do not have ordained clerical powers.

The ceremony, officiated by the Rt. Rev. Felix Odei Annancy, brought together senior clergy and prominent figures within the Anglican Church, including former Archbishop of the Province of West Africa, Most Rev. Gershon Allottey Okine, Most Rev. Daniel Yinkah Sarfo, and the Anglican Bishop of Tema, Rt. Rev. George Neequaye.

The event drew a large gathering of congregants, traditional authorities, parliamentarians, and former ministers from the previous administration, marking what church leaders described as a historic and joyous occasion.

During the ceremony, former President Akufo-Addo took the oath of allegiance, pledging to serve the Church with dedication and integrity.

He also affirmed his commitment to the doctrine and discipline of the Anglican Diocese of Koforidua, in line with the constitution of the Church of the Province of West Africa.

Special prayers were offered for the former President, seeking divine grace and guidance in his new role. Rt. Rev. Annancy explained that the honour was in recognition of Akufo-Addo’s service and commitment, urging him to continue supporting the mission of the Church.

The installation highlights the continued role of faith and service in public life, as the former President takes on a new responsibility within the Anglican Church.
