Gov’t moves to modernize CID with fingerprint upgrade, AI investment

The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has unveiled government plans to modernise the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Delivering the keynote address at the 2025 West Africa Security Social Activity (WASSA) organised by the CID, the Interior Minister said the government intends to upgrade the fingerprint system at the CID headquarters.

He also revealed plans to invest in artificial intelligence to boost criminal intelligence analysis and support the police in tackling emerging cybercrime.

“Policing these days is a shared responsibility. IGP, I am happy to announce the government’s effort to complement your modernization effort in digital infrastructure upgrade and other logistics support.

“We are committed and working tirelessly to upgrade the fingerprint system and the fingerprint registration infrastructure which is in place at the CID headquarters. Going forward, government is prioritizing further investment in Artificial Intelligence for criminal intelligence analysis,” he said,

The Minister commended the CID for its performance, noting that available statistics show a decline in the crime rate across the country.

On the sidelines of the event, the minister, together with the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of the CID, broke ground for the construction of modernised CID cells and office units.

He also called on corporate institutions to support the initiative to ensure its swift completion.

The WASSA celebration is an end-of-year social and thanksgiving event that promotes reflection, recognition and renewed commitment within the Ghana Police Service, as officers assess their performance and reaffirm their dedication to maintaining law and order.
