Sanusi Musah, a resident of Kparekpare near Dambai in the Oti Region, sustained severe cuts to his fingers and palms following a violent altercation with a herdsman over land use.
According to information gathered by the Ghana News Agency, the confrontation arose when the herdsman brought cattle to graze on land Mr. Musah claimed he intended to cultivate this farming season.
Bushari Bature, father of the herdsman, told GNA that his son initially complied and began moving the cattle after Mr. Musah raised concerns.
However, tensions escalated when Mr. Musah allegedly picked up a stick and attacked the herdsman.
To defend himself, the herdsman used a cutlass, and during the ensuing struggle, Mr. Musah reportedly grabbed the weapon, sustaining deep cuts to his fingers and palms.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between farmers and herdsmen in the Oti Region, often driven by disputes over land and access to resources.
Mr. Isaac Kaliwa, Assemblyman for the Kparekpare Electoral Area, who was attending a funeral in the Tatale-Sanguli District at the time, confirmed the development to GNA.
He added that the Unity Committee Chairman, Mr. Adams Aziz, informed him that the herdsman’s father had offered to cover Mr. Musah’s medical expenses. Mr. Kaliwa emphasised that a full medical assessment should first be conducted before any financial arrangements are finalised.
The Assemblyman further noted that the community is advocating mediation between the parties to ensure an amicable resolution and prevent future disputes.
