The Ghana Police Service has clarified that a viral video showing a child being abused did not occur in Ghana, but in Nigeria.
In a press release on Monday, March 23, the Police said the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) investigated the footage after it gained widespread attention on social media.
“After thorough investigations by the CVET, the Police wish to state that the incident occurred in Nigeria,” the statement confirmed.
The footage reportedly shows a man, identified as Odukaye Kunle, assaulting his young son, Boluwatife, during a domestic dispute at 16 Popoola Street, Oko Baale in Ado Odo Otta, Ogun State.
The video captures the toddler approaching his father affectionately for a hug, only to be struck with shocking intensity, sending him to the ground.
The incident sparked widespread outrage online, with many users tagging the Ghana Police Service and CVET, prompting verification.
The release noted that the Nigeria Police Force has since arrested Kunle, who is expected to face court charges. The child and his mother have been taken to a police medical centre in Otta for evaluation and care.
The Ghana Police Service commended the public for their vigilance and assured that it would continue collaborating with citizens and international partners in combating crime.
