The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has identified the revival of regimentation within the Ghana Armed Forces as critical to strengthening operational effectiveness and responding to evolving security threats.
Addressing participants at the opening of the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 in Accra on Monday, March 23 he stressed that discipline, strict adherence to standards, and respect for the chain of command remain the foundation of a professional military.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong noted that the current global and regional security landscape is becoming increasingly complex, marked by hybrid warfare, violent extremism, cyber threats, disinformation, and transnational organised crime. He warned that these challenges demand a proactive and highly disciplined force capable of adapting to modern realities.
“These evolving threats require the Ghana Armed Forces to remain proactive, disciplined, and forward-looking in order to maintain operational relevance and effectiveness,” he said.
The four-day retreat, being held from March 23 to 26 in two phases at Burma Camp and Mampong-Akuapem, is focused on resetting the Armed Forces through renewed emphasis on regimentation to build resilience and unity.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong also underscored the importance of stronger collaboration among the Army, Navy and Air Force, stressing that coordinated planning and unity of effort are essential for mission success.
He further called for deeper cooperation between the military and other state institutions to ensure a cohesive national security system.
On innovation, he urged officers to embrace technology and evolving operational strategies, noting that adaptability will be key to addressing future threats. He also highlighted the military’s broader role in national development, including contributions through logistics, engineering and civil-military cooperation.
