Suriname is set to host its own food festival, drawing inspiration from Ghana’s popular Back to Your Village Festival, organised by Citi FM and Channel One TV.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News’ Fauzu Masawudu on Monday, March 16, Suriname’s Minister for Education, Science and Culture, Dirk Max Currie, said, “One thing we will definitely pick up here is to also have a food festival in Suriname.
“So I invite you to come to Suriname and be at the food festival there. We have people from India so we have Indian food…We have dishes from Indonesia…There is a lot of choices to have.”
The Back to Your Village Festival, set for March 28 and 29 at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra, transforms city into a lively village setting that celebrates authentic Ghanaian food, culture, and heritage. The two-day event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day and is a major highlight of Heritage Month 2026.
More than just a food fair, the festival is a cultural homecoming that showcases traditional cooking techniques and indigenous recipes passed down through generations.
Patrons can enjoy dishes such as tuo zaafi with ayoyo soup, banku with okro stew, fufu with light soup or palm nut soup, waakye, kenkey with pepper and fried fish, ampesi with kontomire stew, and omo tuo, along with local delicacies like akple, aprapransa, abolo, and refreshing palm wine.
The event also offers music, traditional dance, games, and cultural performances, creating a full cultural experience for families and festival-goers. Each participating group represents its heritage, using food as a storytelling tool that connects generations.
Vendors of indigenous foods are invited to register for the festival by calling 0205973973, offering a platform to showcase Ghana’s rich culinary identity.
