A missile has struck the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, with video footage showing fire and smoke rising from the area after the impact.
The attack occurred shortly after two Iran-backed fighters were killed in airstrikes on the Iraqi capital, according to reports by AFP citing multiple sources.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump said the United States had “totally obliterated” every military target on Kharg Island, a strategic Iranian oil terminal in the northern Gulf about 22 miles off the coast of Iran.
Iranian state media reported that more than 15 explosions were heard on the island during the attacks, but said there was no damage to oil infrastructure. The Fars News Agency reported that the strikes targeted air defence systems, a naval base, an airport control tower and a helicopter hangar.
Kharg Island is a critical economic hub for Tehran, with analysts estimating that about 90% of Iran’s oil exports pass through the terminal.
In response, Tehran warned that oil and energy infrastructure belonging to companies cooperating with the United States would be “turned into a pile of ashes” if Iran’s energy facilities were attacked.
Elsewhere in the region, at least 12 medical personnel were killed in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese health ministry said the victims, including doctors and nurses, died when the town’s main healthcare centre in Burj Qalawiya was hit overnight.
The Israel Defence Forces has also issued an evacuation warning for residents in an industrial zone in the western Iranian city of Tabriz, saying it would be “active in the area in the coming hours.” The military urged residents to immediately leave the designated zone, warning that remaining there could put lives at risk.
Israeli forces have also struck additional infrastructure in southern Lebanon, including roads and bridges, while expanding their self-declared evacuation zone and urging hundreds of thousands of residents to move north.
Aid agencies and Lebanese authorities say they are struggling to cope with the growing number of displaced people, as tensions continue to escalate between Israel and Hezbollah, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
