Domestic airfares in Ghana have gone up after two major carriers announced adjustments following the implementation of the Airport Infrastructure Development Charge (AIDC), a government-backed levy aimed at funding airport upgrades.

The Airport Infrastructure Levy took effect on April 1, 2026.

PassionAir said it will incorporate a GHC100 one-way charge into all applicable domestic passenger fares in line with directives tied to the policy.

“In line with the Government of Ghana’s policy on the airport infrastructure modernization programme, PassionAir wishes to inform the public and our valued customers of the introduction of the Airport Infrastructure Development Charge (AIDC) by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL),” the airline said in a public notice.

The carrier added that “the AIDC of GHC100 (One-way) will be incorporated into all domestic applicable passenger fares as a tax… effective 1 April 2026,” noting that it will apply to all tickets issued from that date.

Similarly, Africa World Airlines confirmed an upward adjustment in fares, citing the same policy directive.

“Africa World Airlines (AWA) wishes to officially inform the public and our valued passengers of an upward adjustment to published fares for all tickets issued on or after 1 April 2026,” the airline said.

It explained that the changes follow “the implementation of the newly approved Airport Infrastructure Development Charge (AIDC), a Government of Ghana policy directive backed by law through the Ministry of Transport.”

According to AWA, “an upward adjustment of GH¢100 will be applied to all domestic routes and US$15 to all regional routes.”

The AIDC forms part of broader efforts by the government, through agencies such as the Ghana Airports Company Limited and the Ministry of Transport, to raise dedicated funding for airport infrastructure development and modernization across the country.

The increase is expected to affect passengers flying on domestic routes, with airlines passing the levy directly into ticket prices as required under the new policy.
