A sanitation crisis is looming in parts of the Ashanti Region as tricycle waste collectors face difficulties offloading refuse at the Oti Landfill Site.
The challenge stems from the persistent breakdown of equipment at the facility, preventing operators from disposing of waste. As a result, tricycles loaded with refuse have lined up along the road leading to the landfill.
The Oti Landfill Site serves as a major disposal point for solid waste generated within the Kumasi metropolis and several districts and municipalities across the region.
With tricycles now playing a central role in waste transportation, operators say delays at the site are disrupting their work and raising concerns about a potential build-up of waste in communities.
The waste collectors have blamed the frequent breakdown of the equipment used in levelling the refuse to make space for more waste to be dumped. The tricycles have been parked for hours as operators had to wait to get the refuse offloaded before they can leave.
They have called on authorities to intervene and fix this recurring issue permanently.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, which manages the landfill site, is yet to respond to the development despite Citi News’ attempts to reach its officials.
