The President of the Ashanti Regional Council of Zongo Chiefs, Naaba Musah Akanbonga, has called on Muslims to put aside divisions and embrace unity to accelerate development in their communities.
Delivering a keynote address at the Annual Durbar of Northern Chiefs and residents in the Ashanti Region, he warned that rivalry, jealousy and hatred continue to undermine progress in many Zongo communities.
Speaking on the theme “Peace and Unity among Muslims” at the forecourt of the Kumasi Central Mosque, Naaba Akanbonga stressed that unity is essential for communities to benefit meaningfully from government development initiatives.
He noted that persistent divisions have weakened collective efforts, making it difficult for Zongo communities to present a united front in pursuing development opportunities.
The Zongo Chiefs President also expressed concern over disturbances that affected this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, particularly the traditional “Gangara” picnic, which he said was disrupted by acts driven by hostility.
According to him, some individuals deliberately blocked access routes to the event grounds, preventing many from participating in what is meant to be a moment of joy and communal bonding.
Drawing on teachings from the Qur’an, he emphasised the importance of preserving peace and protecting lives, urging members of the community to reject violence and uphold mutual respect.
Naaba Akanbonga further advised the youth to avoid negative influences, including drug abuse, armed robbery and other anti-social behaviours, which he said threaten both individual futures and community stability.
He also encouraged young girls to prioritise education, noting that it remains a key pathway to empowerment and long-term development.
The durbar, which brought together chiefs, community leaders and residents, featured cultural displays, including drumming, dancing and traditional performances, highlighting the rich heritage of northern communities in the region.
