The Ayensu River, the main water source for the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant in the Central Region, has recorded improved turbidity levels, allowing smoother operations at the facility.
Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, who visited the plant on Tuesday, April 7, alongside NADMO’s Deputy Director-General for Operations, Teddy Addi Saforo, said Ghana Water Limited has replaced costly polymers with alum in the treatment process.
Despite the improvement, the plant is not yet running at full capacity. Its daily production has been reduced from 35,000 cubic meters to 28,000 cubic meters due to reliance on a single raw water pump.
Last year, the Headworks had to shut down completely after illegal mining in Anum Apapamu, Eastern Region, caused severe turbidity in the river.
Addressing Citi News on Tuesday, April 7, the Deputy Minister attributed the current improvement to actions taken against illegal miners upstream and urged responsible mining practices.
“Some temporary works have been done to manage the situation, but the bigger picture is addressing illegal mining and its impact on our environment,” she said.
