A youth group in Chereponi in the North East Region, calling itself Arise Youth for Chereponi, has petitioned the Chereponi District Assembly over the proposed site for the district’s 24-hour economy market.
The group expressed strong support for the project, describing it as a significant initiative that could boost economic growth and improve livelihoods in the area.
However, in their petition, the youth raised concerns about the proposed location, noting that the site currently hosts active businesses.
They warned that construction of the market at the location could disrupt ongoing economic activities and lead to loss of livelihoods for affected families.
“The proposed site is already an active business market. Constructing the new facility at this location will disrupt ongoing trading activities, displace traders, and potentially halt business operations for the period of construction (about 2years) contrary to the project’s aim of boosting the local economy,” the statement said.
The group is therefore urging the District Assembly to engage stakeholders and consider relocating the project to a more suitable site.
