The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has sworn in the reconstituted Board of the Fisheries Commission, ushering in a new 12-member body in line with Ghana’s updated fisheries governance framework under the Fisheries Act, 2025 (Act 1146).
The reconstitution reflects provisions in the new law aimed at broadening institutional representation, strengthening oversight, and promoting a more coordinated approach to managing the country’s fisheries resources.
At the inauguration ceremony on Friday, April 10, the Minister emphasised that the role of the Board goes beyond administrative duties, describing it as a national responsibility that requires accountability, environmental stewardship, and commitment to the country’s Blue Economy agenda.
She urged members to uphold high standards in the discharge of their duties and work towards building a sustainable, well-governed, and resilient fisheries sector that supports food security, creates jobs, and contributes to national development.
The Board is chaired by Prof. Wisdom Akpalu and includes:
● Dr. Afisah Zakariah (Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture),
● Prof. Benjamin Betey Campion (Fisheries Commission),
● Mubarick Masawudu (Ghana Maritime Authority),
● Commodore Ben Baba Abdul (Ghana Navy),
●Eric Ken Winful (Ghana Police Service),
● Esi Nana Nerquaye-Tetteh (Environmental Protection Authority),
● Stephen Yeboah Ampiaw (Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority)
● Ruby Asmah (Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Institute)
● Esi Biney (Water Resources),
●Emmanuel Allegye-Cudjoe (Veterinary Services Directorate)
● Frank Kwesi Alhoon (Ghana Tuna Association).
Emelia Arthur who is also the Member of Parliament for Shama expressed confidence that the diverse expertise represented on the Board will enhance collaboration, support sound policy decisions, and help ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s fisheries sector.
