The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has rescued a 29-year-old woman who was found in a drain near the Afrikiko Traffic Light in Accra after a distress call triggered an emergency operation.
According to the GNFS, the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, when a distress call was received at 07:39 am at its office at the Jubilee House from Jubilee Information Control, prompting the immediate deployment of a rescue team.
A five-member crew led by ADO I Alex Amankwah successfully extricated the woman, identified as Rita James, believed to be a Nigerian national, at about 08:30 am.
She was found inside a drainage system along the stretch near the busy intersection.
Following the rescue, she was conveyed to the Nima Police Station for further interrogation before being referred to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital at Asylum Down for medical attention.
Preliminary accounts from the victim suggest she had hidden in the drain overnight after allegedly being chased by some men who intended to harm her.
