Veteran rapper Okyeame Kwame has opened up about his struggles with formal education during his early years, disclosing that he faced significant academic challenges while growing up.

Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, April 17, the award-winning musician shared a candid account of his childhood, noting that he found it difficult to keep up with academic work despite being enrolled in school.

According to him, his academic performance lagged far behind his peers, a situation that caused concern within his family, particularly his father, who placed a high premium on education.

“I didn’t know book when I was going to school. Even at ten years, I was still struggling with the alphabet. And my father who was very lettered and studied accountancy in Italy was very brokenhearted.

“In school, if there were 58 students in the class, I used to place 57th but whenever it was time for drama, singing and poem recitals, I was the go-to guy.”

Despite his academic difficulties, Okyeame Kwame explained that he discovered his strengths in the creative arts at an early age.

Activities such as drama, music, and poetry became avenues through which he could express himself and build confidence, eventually shaping the path that would define his career.
