The Minister for Energy, Dr. John Jinapor, has confirmed plans to visit the site of the Ghana Grid Company’s (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation following a fire outbreak that caused significant damage to the facility.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:01 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, when the substation, one of the key installations in Ghana’s power transmission network, was engulfed by flames under circumstances that are yet to be fully established.

The fire raised immediate concerns about the stability of the electricity supply and the safety of critical infrastructure within the country’s energy sector.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, April 24, the Head of Communications at the Energy Ministry, Richmond Rockson, provided an update on the situation and outlined the immediate steps taken following the fire outbreak.

“Engineers were mobilised immediately to go to the field and tell us what the situation was, and brief us. And as a precautionary measure, what we did was to put off all units to protect the systems and personnel who were on the ground.

“I can confirm this morning that the Minister of Energy will go there with officials of the Energy Commission, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission and other power sector stakeholders to get a fair briefing and also take other steps based on the briefings they will receive.”

The Ghana Grid Company Limited, commonly known as GRIDCo, plays a central role in transmitting electricity from power generation plants to distribution companies across the country. As such, any disruption at one of its major substations has the potential to affect power delivery to homes, businesses, and industries.

In the aftermath of the incident, engineers and technical teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to assess the extent of the damage and ensure that appropriate emergency measures were taken to contain the situation.
