Tension is escalating in Salaga as the Kpembe Development Youth group strongly opposes the East Gonja Municipal Assembly’s decision to relocate the proposed 24-hour market project.

The Assembly recently announced plans to move the project from the Salaga Senior High School (SASS) Park to an abandoned TVET school site along the Salaga–Tamale Road, following consultations with stakeholders.

However, the youth group has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, insisting that the original siting of the market at SASS Park should be maintained.

According to the group, the initial location was agreed upon after extensive consultations involving key stakeholders, including the Kpembewura, and should not be changed.

They argued that reversing the decision undermines stakeholder consensus and could erode community trust in local authorities.

The group is therefore calling on the Assembly and relevant authorities to reconsider the relocation and uphold what they describe as a collectively agreed position in the interest of fairness and development.

“We want the original sitting to be maintained. It’s either here or the project doesn’t come on at all. When you go to Damongo, Bole, and other places, the market is centred between two towns. Why is Salaga’s own being taken to the Tamale road?. We’re petitioning President John Dramani Mahama, the Regional Minister, and the MP,” he said.
