President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana will strengthen its relations with Zimbabwe, highlighting expanded cooperation in trade, agriculture, mining and energy.
The President made the remarks during a bilateral engagement with Zimbabwean leader Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Peduase Lodge on Thursday, April 2, as part of his state visit to Ghana.
Both leaders discussed ways to translate historical bonds into economic partnerships.
President Mahama also underscored the willingness of Ghana to coordinate trade across the African continent.
“The General Cooperation Agreement, signed in 2023 and the successful convening of the inaugural Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation provide a strong foundation for advancing our partnership in practical and meaningful ways.
“Today’s meeting comes at a critical time for our continent to advance the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area. There is an urgent need for African countries to strengthen intra-African trade, investment and cooperation.
“Ghana, as the host of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, remains committed to promoting economic integration. In this regard, Ghana’s strategic position within ECOWAS and Zimbabwe within SADC presents a unique opportunity to strengthen the linkages between West and Southern Africa.”
Meanwhile, as Zimbabwe is the sole endorsed candidate of the African States Group for a seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, President Mnangagwa has commended Ghana for its support for the bid.
