Technical fault at Ghana Gas plant triggers power outages

A technical fault at the Ghana National Gas Company processing plant has led to a temporary reduction in gas supply to thermal power stations, resulting in power supply disruptions in parts of the country.

In a joint statement dated April 15, 2026, the Ghana National Gas Company and the Ghana Grid Company Limited confirmed that the plant experienced a failure of the Bumer Management System (BMS) controller for the Heat Medium System (HMS), a critical component of its operations.

According to the statement, preliminary assessments indicate that the affected system is damaged and will require full replacement, necessitating an emergency shutdown of the facility.

The shutdown has consequently disrupted gas supply to thermal power plants, leading to intermittent electricity supply challenges in some parts of the country.

A comprehensive technical and safety risk assessment is currently underway to determine the fastest and safest route to restore operations.

The statement further indicated that engineers are working “around the clock” to replace the faulty system and speed up restoration efforts.

“Subject to the outcome of ongoing assessments, Ghana Gas will commence processes to restore operations within the course of today,” the release noted.

The two institutions have assured the public that updates will be provided as the situation evolves, while appealing for patience and understanding over the disruption.
