The Combined Kumasi Central Market Traders Union is demanding the immediate resumption of work on Phase Two of the Kejetia–Central Market redevelopment project, warning it will embark on a major course of action if government fails to act by May 2026.
Work on the project, which began more than seven years ago when former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, cut sod, has stalled for more than three years despite reaching about 70 per cent completion.

Sources told Citi News that contractors have sent workers home, while expatriate staff have also left the country due to uncertainty over the release of funds to continue the project.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, April 14, Emelia Coffie, Secretary of the Combined Kumasi Central Market Traders Union, called for the immediate release of funds to get contractors back to site and ensure work resumes by May 2026.
The traders, who were displaced to make way for the redevelopment, say the prolonged delay continues to disrupt their livelihoods.
Traders are currently operating from scattered locations within the Kumasi Central Business District without permanent trading spaces.
According to them, the situation is severely affecting both sales and income.

The Union also raised concerns about health risks at these temporary locations, citing flooding, poor sanitation, and offensive sewage odour.
They further expressed frustration over what they described as unfulfilled assurances from the government, noting that the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, had recently indicated that work would resume by March 2026, but the site remains inactive.
