World Bank praises Ghana’s economic recovery, hails Ato Forson’s leadership

Ghana’s economic recovery has received strong endorsement from the World Bank, with senior officials commending both the country’s recent performance and the leadership of Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson.

At a high-level meeting in Washington, D.C., the World Bank’s Regional Vice President for Western and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana, described Ghana’s economic turnaround over the past year as “impressive,” signalling the institution’s readiness to deepen its support for the country.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Dr Forson noted that 2025 marked a decisive turning point following a challenging economic period.

He said Ghana is now firmly on the path to debt sustainability and is transitioning toward sustained growth and development.

World Bank officials were also emphatic in their praise of the government’s reform agenda. The Regional Practice Director for Prosperity (Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment), Seynabou Sakho, described the Minister’s fiscal reforms as exemplary, noting that his work on economic restructuring has gained recognition beyond Ghana.

Similarly, the Regional Practice Director for People (Education, Health and Social Protection), Trina Hague, acknowledged Ghana’s resilience and the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations despite external economic pressures.

Highlighting key gains, Dr Forson pointed to a sharp decline in inflation—from 23% to 3.2%—alongside improved currency stability and sustained investment in social intervention programmes.

With macroeconomic stability gradually restored, the Finance Minister outlined the government’s next phase of development, which will prioritise strategic sectors including agriculture, energy, education, and infrastructure.

The renewed backing from the World Bank is expected to reinforce Ghana’s efforts to consolidate its recovery gains and accelerate inclusive economic growth in the coming years.
