Sports Analyst Scott Geelan has questioned the timing of Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico, describing the arrangement as disruptive ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s World Cup Central, Geelan argued that the scheduling of the Mexico friendly outside the official international window raises concerns, especially so close to the World Cup.
“Personally I think the Mexico friendly is probably the more disruptive part of the schedule. I think it is really bizarre that it was organized outside of the window. I just can’t see the logic for it and I think it is a shame they had to fix this organised pre-World Cup where one of them is featuring a number of players who presumably are not going to play,” he said.
Despite his concerns, the analyst admitted that the friendlies remain important for Ghana’s preparations, as they offer the technical team a final opportunity to assess player understanding, chemistry, and tactical discipline before the start of the tournament.
He acknowledged that the matches would provide Black Stars Head Coach Carlos Queiroz with an opportunity to further assess his squad and evaluate how well players have adapted to his tactical approach.
He noted that Queiroz has already named a 23-man squad for the friendly game, adding that the fixtures would also allow players to demonstrate their quality and readiness ahead of the tournament.
