Allied Health Professionals protest over delayed Directorate

Members of the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professions on Friday, May 15, staged a peaceful protest at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), demanding the urgent operationalisation of an Allied Health Directorate and the appointment of a substantive director.

The protest was to express concerns over what the group describes as long-standing governance and leadership challenges affecting allied health administration and healthcare delivery at the facility.

Members marched through the principal streets of the hospital wearing red armbands to register their displeasure.

Speaking to the media after the demonstration, Acting Chairman of the Korle Bu chapter of the federation, Edward Ayem, said the group has, for several years, engaged hospital management, the Ministry of Health, the National Labour Commission, and other stakeholders on the issue, but progress has been slow.

He explained that the demonstration was intended to draw attention to the persistent challenges and to push for an urgent resolution.

“Our ultimate demand remains very clear: the full operationalisation of the Allied Health Directorate at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the appointment of a substantive Allied Health Director to provide professional leadership, coordination, accountability, and effective governance for Allied Health services,” he said.

Mr Ayem stressed that allied health professionals remain committed to dialogue but insist that the delay in establishing the directorate must be addressed without further postponement.
